This steam chicken is different from most Chinese steam chicken recipes which called for ginger to give steam chicken dish a fresh kick, cut down fattiness and even tenderise meat. In this tasty, herba-licious Steam Chicken Thigh with Dried Tangerine Peel, Red Dates & Goji Berries Recipe, the bitter and pungent tangerine peel was used to not only makes the whole dish smells good but tangerine peel or commonly known as Chen Pi, 陈皮 in Chinese is believe to have the ‘ability to regulate Qi’ in TCM. Tangerine peel is known as 'warm' in nature which help to eliminate 'Cold' in the body while the bitter taste tends to have a cleansing action on the body to clear Heat, remove Dampness and increase urination or bowel movements. The pungency of tangerine peel helps to promote the circulations of Qi and Body Fluids.
Red dates are also 'warm' in nature. The sweetness of red dates tends to slow down acute reactions and detoxify the body. They also have a tonic effect which replenish Qi and Blood. Goji berries on the other hand is 'neutral' in nature compared to the 2 dried ingredients mentioned earlier. This means that consuming goji berries typically doesn't affect the balance in your body. They are sweet, thus has the same actions towards body like red dates.
Last but not least, chicken itself is consider a warming protein in TCM compared to duck.
