3 months after I first picked up electric bass over 20 years ago, I had to play a gig with my friends at their school. I remember it was a three song set, and one of the songs was 'Enter Sandman' from Metallica's 1991 'The Black Album'.

In the process of listening to the album back in the day to learn 'Enter Sandman', I was also drawn to 'My Friend of Misery'. It had a mesmerising chordal bass intro, and I had no idea how the heck it was played back then.

'My Friend of Misery' was also the tune a friend used to teach me basic theory, but it was more than a decade later that I actually knuckled down and forced myself to learn chord theory and modes.
