The original version of “2 Bad” was leaked by American producer Eulonzo on August 29th, 2022, what would’ve been Michael’s 64th birthday. It was unknown this version existed.

Although fans are familiar with the original version from the “HIStory” album in 1995, as well as the remixed version on the “Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory In The Mix” album, it has been revealed that “2 Bad” (originally titled “2 Bad (to Be True)”) was originally written as far back as 1984 during the Victory sessions with his brothers, including Jermaine, and recorded in the same year, as well as during his brother Jermaine’s eponymous album sessions, at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angelos. It’s believed that this was made around the same time as “Tell Me I’m Not Dreaming (Too Good to Be True)”, a duet with Jermaine for his eponymous album.

The song is rumored to have been written after his recovery from the Pepsi burn and the overwhelming media coverage on the incident. Shortly after writing the song, he began working further on this version around the summer of 1984 with Joe Kehr, including Jermaine. Later on, Wendy & Lisa would be invited brought into the studio by Joe Kehr to join and contribute to the song; Wendy Melvoin played percussion and organ. Lisa Coleman played keyboards.

While the song runs under 5 minutes, the full-length version is a 10 minute long jam session, with extra lyrics and more adlibs. Due to time constraints, the song was edited down to multiple versions, to potentially fit on a vinyl if they ever decided to put it on an album.

During one of the sessions for the song, Joe brought in multiple musicians and friends, half of whom would later make up to be The Rag Tag Band; Sarah Greim, aka Syradelic, for guitar, as well as Ray Parker Jr. for additional rhythm guitar. Barron St. Massey & Eric L. Hayes for the horn arrangements. Dean “Suitorfoot” Moffit Jr. for drums. And at the last minute, Wendy Melvoin & Lisa Coleman, from The Revolution / Wendy & Lisa, as mentioned before. The latter duo would cause a shift in the studio between Michael and Jermaine, due to their history with Prince and The Revolution.

While they all liked this version, Michael and Jermaine had several conflicts with it, particularly with Wendy & Lisa’s inclusion. Michael was mostly satisfied with the song, while Jermaine wasn’t. Jermaine wanted to rework the song and rewrite the lyrics, due to feeling it was ‘too aggressive’ for his younger brother at that point in his career, as well as Quincy later being not too keen on the song in general. So due to the other parties involved being unhappy with the decision, this version was shelved into the vault. Certain elements of the song were later used for “Tell Me I’m Not Dreaming (Too Good to Be True)” by Jermaine Jackson.

Michael would later on revisit the song for the ‘HIStory’ album in 1994-1995, this one being produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, who also produced the original version of “Jam”. He eventually put it on the album, while this version remained unreleased. It would later evolve into “Tell Me I’m Not Dreaming (Too Good to Be True)” by Jermaine, with Michael duetting, for Jermaine’s eponymous album, which was released in 1984.
