O município, integra a Comunidade Intermunicipal do Oeste e faz fronteira, com os municípios do Cadaval, Azambuja, Vila Franca de Xira, Arruda dos Vinhos, Sobral de Monte Agraço e Torres Vedras.
Alenquer, desempenhou papel importante em cada época da história, tendo um riquíssimo património: sítios pré-históricos, castelos, conventos, igrejas, ermidas, quintas e casas senhoriais.
Damião de Góis, historiador e humanista, epistológrafo, viajante, diplomata e alto funcionário régio, nasceu em Alenquer a 2 de Fevereiro de 1502 e faleceu em Alenquer a 30 de Janeiro de 1574.

Damião de Góis, historian and humanist, epistolographer, traveler, diplomat and senior royal official, was born in Alenquer on February 2, 1502 and died in Alenquer on January 30, 1574.
