In our last video of Winter Melon Clear Soup, we mentioned that we bought 1.3g winter melon? This is the second recipe that we make using the same melon, the Southern Style Thai Sour Soup with Shrimps or Gaeng Som Goong. You will be surprised on how winter melon blend really well with this famously spicy and sour Thai soup. This is an easy Thai style soup, minus the making of Gaeng Som paste from scratch of course. Nevertheless, it is satisfactory to be able to make your own paste from scratch. Worth mentioning, both recipes were adapted from Thai Girl in the Kitchen recipe.

GAENG SOM MAIN INGREDIENTS (2 servings)
shrimps, medium _ 8-12
winter melon, slice into bite size _ 300- 350 g (or raw papaya)
long beans, cut into 2” long _ 1 handful (omit if don’t have but it will add to a nice crunch)
cauliflower, cut into bite size _ 1 handful (replace with more melon/ papaya)
water _ 600 ml
SEASONING FOR GAENG SOM
Thai palm sugar _ about 1/2 Tbsp (adjust to taste)
tamarind paste _ 3-4 Tbsp
fish sauce _ to taste
lime juice _ about 2 Tbsp

GAENG SOM PASTE INGREDIENTS (for about 600ml curry)
dried chilies _ 4 g (about 2)
salt _ 3/4 tsp
bird’s eye chilies, green _ 5g (about 2-3)
garlic _ 18 g
shallots _ 25 g
fresh turmeric _ 12-15g
shrimp paste _ 1 Tbsp
