Academic libraries have been involved with issues that fall under the broad category of “scholarly communication” for decades. For many libraries, initiatives related to open access are a logical extension of this need. From this perspective, acting as a credible source for information is a valuable role for libraries to serve as a foundational element of scholarly communication programmes.
