In this Chemistry video in Hindi for class 11 and class 9 we defined and explained isotopes of an element. Atoms having same atomic number but different atomic mass are called isotopes of an element. As the chemical properties are due to the atomic number, i.e., the number of protons in the nucleus, they are of same nature and hence considered to be same material. And when we put them in the periodic table, we need to put them togather in the same place. hence the name isotope. This name has two Greek roots isos meaning same and topos meaning place. Hydrogen has several isotopes, among them only two are stable, viz., protium (having only one proton in its nucleus) and deuterium (having one proton and one neutron in its nucleus).
Carbon has three isotopes, viz., C-12, C-13 and C-14.
Oxygen has three isotopes, viz., O-16, O-17 and O-18.
