One of Mexico's most important and traditional observances takes place each year when our folklore, gastronomy, creativity and love come together in a celebration of life.

Our homes are filled with color, the fragrance of copal, and delightful flavors. This is the altar for Day of the Dead, an offering to those loved ones who have left this world to live in the great beyond.

The seven-level altar symbolizes the steps necessary to enter the next life and to rest in peace according to Mexican tradition.

The decorated skulls, the Catrina images and the skeletons bring color to the altars.

Mexico has honored its dead since pre-Hispanic times. We remember them and they live in our memories, in our hearts.

Day of the Dead traditions are present in every part of the country. En each region, hundreds of artisans sculpt, paint and create designs allusive to this fiesta. Here tradition joins with art.

At this time of year, a strange personage appears in the streets of towns and cities, an elegant lady. Although a skeleton, she is smiling and happy.

She is known by her flowers, typical jewelry and traditional apparel from bygone centuries.
