When faced with large amounts of data, we descriptive statistics to capture the essence of the data. Those descriptive statistics start with measures of location, telling us where the data is centered, and then continue with measures of dispersion (range and standard deviation). They also include measure of whether the data has a skew, positive or negative, and the prevalence of extreme values (kurtosis).
