When we bought the new Jeep, we decided to try out a new toad setup. We have a different attachment point and kept the stock bumper, and decided to use wireless signal lights, hung on the bike rack so they weren't blocked by the bikes.

Well, that didn't work out that great. The first issue is that they eat batteries like crazy. We were always paranoid that they were out when we were traveling at night. The other issue is that they were on the back of Jeep, out of view of the camera that we use to monitor the Jeep with. So, when it got dark, we couldn't see the Jeep - it could have broken loose, and odds are high that we wouldn't notice it.

So, we gave in and installed a more traditional wiring harness. We went with the CoolTech option for a couple reasons. The new Jeeps do some new things with the electrical bus - like shut it all down three minutes or so after the Jeep is turned off. Which means no lights, if all you do is plug into the Jeeps wiring. So, that means installing secondary bulbs, maybe diodes and bulbs, or what we found to be the simplest option - the CoolTech harness that implements a switch for either Jeep control or tow vehicle control.

Installation involves cutting into and splicing 4 wires in the passenger kick panel trim, mounting a switch, and routing the wire to the front of the Jeep for the connector. Not a bad install, and it appears to work flawlessly. We shall see in our upcoming travels.
