The first generation of the Sprinter was introduced in 1995 as the replacement of the aging T1 series. It was developed in cooperation with VW. During its life cycle the 1st gen Sprinter received more facelifts. In February 2000 the front was changed, including streamlined looking headlights and a modified mask. The first generation was replaced by the Sprinter II in 2006.

The production of the facelifted 1st gen version was launched again in 2013 at the Gorky Automobile Plant (GAZ, ГАЗ).
