Surat Chennai Expressway is a mega project that aims to improve the connectivity between these cities and other regions too. It also aims to improve the industrial activities and trade. It passes through six states in India that is: Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The total length of the expressway will be about 1,271 km or (790 mi), and it reduces both travel time as well as the distance from around 35 hours to around 18 hours, and it will reduce the distance by 300 km. The total estimated cost of this project is about ₹ 48,000crore or (~US$5.5 billion), and it is expected to be completed by December 2026. The Surat Chennai Expressway is a part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana's Phase-II, a skyrocketing program of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) that aims to develop a network of highways and expressways across India. The expressway will also help to transport goods directly from the national capital to South India via the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway and this expressway. The expressway will start from Surat in Gujarat, pass through six states, districts and their states, and terminate at Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The expressway will have four to six lanes and will be partially access-controlled, meaning that there will be some entry and exit points along the way. The expressway will also have service roads, toll plazas, rest areas, interchanges and flyovers. The expressway will be having a mixture of greenfield as well as the brownfield sections too. Greenfield sections are those where new roads will be constructed on new alignments, while brownfield sections are those where existing roads will be widened or upgraded. The Greenfield section is between Surat and Ahmednagar passing through Nashik and the section from Akkalkot to Kurnool, linking Maharashtra with Telangana and Andhra Pradesh via Karnataka, will be greenfield sections of the expressway. The rest of the corridor will be brownfield sections. The expressway will pass through some major cities and towns such as Surat, Nashik, Ahmednagar, Barshi, Solapur, Akkalkot, Kalaburagi, Mahabubnagar, Kurnool, Kadapa, Tirupati and Chennai. It will also connect with some important national highways such as NH-48 (Delhi–Mumbai Expressway), NH-60 (Nashik–Solapur), NH-65 (Solapur–Hyderabad), NH-44 (Hyderabad–Bangalore), NH-40 (Kurnool–Chittoor) and NH-32 (Chittoor–Chennai). The expressway will have multiple benefits for the people and the economy of the regions it passes through. It will reduce travel time and cost for passengers and freight movement. It will improve connectivity between industrial hubs such as Surat, Nashik, Solapur, Kalaburagi and Chennai. It will boost trade and commerce between northern and southern India. It will also create employment opportunities during construction and operation phases. The expressway is currently under bidding and land acquisition stages. The project is divided into several packages that are awarded to different contractors through competitive bidding. The project is being implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which is an autonomous agency under MoRTH that is responsible for developing and maintaining national highways in India. The Surat Chennai Expressway is a visionary project
