City of Wetzlar

About the City of Wetzlar, Germany:
When Goethe arrived in Wetzlar in May 1772, he found the town less inviting compared to the grand cities he had previously known, like Leipzig and Strasbourg. Wetzlar, though positioned beautifully along the river valley, appeared narrow and uncomfortable for travel, especially with its steep streets. Despite its status as the 'Capital of Rights' with the highest civil court, Goethe struggled to appreciate the town, as he was forced to continue his legal studies there, leaving behind friends in Darmstadt. His frustration, amplified by unrequited love for Charlotte Buff, led him to write his famous novel The Sorrows of Young Werther in 1774, inspired by his experiences in Wetzlar. Today, much of Wetzlar remains preserved as it was during Goethe’s time, drawing visitors to explore the scenes that influenced his iconic work.

The story of the costumes:
Wetzlar is where Goethe interned at the court and fell in love, inspiring his famous novel The Sorrows of Young Werther. Today, visitors can experience this literary history through costumed actors portraying characters like Werther and Lotte, dressed in 18th-century attire. Lotte's white dress with a pink ribbon, as described in the novel, is on display in the Lottehaus museum, along with Werther's iconic yellow vest and blue coat, which became popular after the book's release. Tragically, these outfits were associated with a wave of 'Werther fever' suicides, where young readers dressed as the character. The museum offers tourists a unique experience to connect with the novel’s characters and follow Goethe’s footsteps through guided tours.
