One of the highlights of any visit to Gonarezhou National Park in south-eastern Zimbabwe is the opportunity to stand under one of the enormous Mutondo trees (wild mango/Cordyla africana) that characterise the park. These extraordinary legumes are notable for their impressive stature and for the fact that their fruit aren't, unlike other legumes, a pod, but actually look like a miniature replica of a mango. The distinctive yellow timber was traditionally used to make the biggest, loudest drums of all, and they are truly a gift from nature. In this episode, Gus (the African Plant Hunter) shares their story from the banks of the Runde river at Chipinda Pools, just as summer is coming to an end.
