Unknown Source of Meat

Some dog food
may contain meat flour.

Basically, meat flour is made by a procedure called "rendering,"
which is finely grinding unknown ingredients
at high temperatures.

In this process, there is a possibility that
raw materials of unknown origin,
such as animal carcasses and rotten intestines, may be used.

In particular, when animal carcasses were used,
there have been cases where drug ingredients used to euthanize animals* have been detected,
which can be dangerous to dogs.
*Pentobarbital

According to a paper* published in the US National Center for Biotechnology Information,
the digestion rate for protein and amino acid is 12% higher
when the feed is made from raw chicken
than from chicken by-products.
*Raw and rendered animal by-products as ingredients in dog diets (Murray et al., 1997)

Then, how can we choose good dog food?
It is best to check the ingredient label
on the back of the food packaging.

Good dog food
are those that accurately indicate
the types of meat used,
such as “beef” or “chicken,”
rather than meat flour, poultry by-products,
dried ground chicken, etc.
