ലോകത്തെങ്ങുമായി മൂവായിരത്തി അഞ്ഞൂറിനടുത്ത് കൊതുകിനങ്ങളെ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്. അനോഫെലെസ്, കൂലെക്സ്, ഈഡിസ് , മാൻസോനിയ, ആർമിജെരസ് എന്നിവയാണ് പ്രധാന ജനുസുകൾ. ഇത്രയധികം ഇനങ്ങളിലായി നിരവധി സ്പീഷിസുകൾ ഉണ്ടെങ്കിലും വിരലിലെണ്ണാവുന്ന കൊതുകിനങ്ങൾ മാത്രമാണ് നമുക്ക് രോഗങ്ങളുണ്ടാക്കുന്നത്
