We picked up a New Holland 499 Haybine and a New Holland 273 Hayliner Small Square Baler at a local farm auction last month.
A few things needed fixed on the haybine; some new hoses, some new hydraulic fittings to be able to work with our 1969 John Deere 4020 tractor, replace hydraulic fluid, and some new knives.
The square baler needed a new pickup chain, some new springs, to have the fluids changed on the hydraulic pump (for compressing the bale), some new fingers, and the hitch had a crack that needed welding.
For some sight unseen farm equipment, the fixing it needed wasn't that bad. All in all, both units were in really good shape, so I'd say we came out of the deal alright.
It's pretty exciting really! Our first year making our own hay on our ranch. Though it's not a large amount, it's something, and we are thrilled to have got it up dry and under cover before any drop of rain touched it. Making our own hay is rewarding in that we are able to be really careful about cutting it at the right time, knowing exactly what's in it, and ensuring it's baled dry. All of these things become our problem now too, so if we mess up, only we are to blame.
