A wonderful day hiking in the Volcanoes National Park. We toured the Thurston Lava Tube and then hiked the Crater Rim Trail to the Kilauea Iki trail. The trail across the floor of the crater is a solidified lake of lava over 400 feet deep created when the Kilauea Iki crater erupted in 1959. We were fortunate to see the Kilauea Caldera erupting, which started the day before our visit. The lava fountains spraying from the various fissures were a spectacular sight, especially after dark when streams of lava were visible on the crater floor.
