When we only have 2 cores of fiber optic cable infrastructure already installed on the network, we can implement several services and many different network segments by utilizing WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) device technology and VLANs.

WDM device technology works by carrying different information signals on one optical fiber using different wavelengths of laser light. while VLAN VLAN is a method used to distribute several different network segments or services on router devices with limited physical interfaces. So that with this VLAN we can distinguish different services but still on the same physical interface.
