If you want to walk better but you have a spastic and stiff stroke leg in a straight position, you might want to do the exercises I will show you in this video.

Now that you can bend your spastic stroke leg after stretching and doing bed our couch exercises, you would want to improve your control and ability to move better and smoother.

In this video we will be doing sitting exercises to practice and improve the movements in preparation for standing and walking. Just be aware that these exercises are to be done when you are able to stretch and move your leg while you are laying on your bed or your couch.

First exercise is hip flexion. You would want to set up straight with your hip at 90° and your knee bent. Bring your leg up as high as you can while keeping your knee bent. When that gets easy keep your legs straight and bring your entire leg up and down. Do that 10 times.

Second exercise is controlled knee bending.
Starting position is bringing your leg up and keeping it straight then try to bend your knee slowly and in a controlled manner. Do your best not to just drop and bend your knee very quickly. When that gets easy do the extending and bending of the knee a little bit faster. Do that 10 times. If that isndifficult for you at this time try placing a paper plate under your foot or if you have a skateboard , use that. You will bring your foot forward to extend your leg and back to bend your knee. And finally, try to bring your leg and foot forward and bring it back 10 times.

Third exercise is stepping to the side. step your stroke leg to the side and bring it back to the middle 10 times. If that is still difficult use a paper plate under your foot and slide your leg from the middle to the side and back. If that is still difficult, assist your leg with your good arm but making sure that it is your leg that does more than 50% of the movement.

Fourth exercise is hip external rotation or pointing your knee out words. We will start with a paper plate under our foot to help it slide and move easier. Your point of reference will be your knee and foot which you would want to point out the words and to the side. When that gets easier remove the paper plate and do the same movement. Next progression after that is picking up that entire leg keeping your hip and your knee bent and pointing your knee out.

Last exercise is toes up. First we need to practice bringing your toes up with your Stroke leg straight 10 times. Next try to bend your knee and bring your toes up 10 times. Last progression for that is keeping your entire leg up with your knee bent and spelling your name or words with your foot and toes. You can also use numbers.

Try to do this multiple times during the day. Be patient because consistency is the key and never give up.
