With its beautiful trifoliate leaves and its distinctive, peeling bark, this remarkable tree, native to the Brandberg mountains of Namibia, is a rare find. I was thrilled to come across some examples in the National Botanic Garden in Windhoek. Part of the grape family (Vitaceae), the fruit are notably inedible, but its succulent nature ensures it can survive in the harsh desert environment of its home range. What a wonderful pachycaul encounter for me!
