✋Hello! Today we will admire the cliff consisting of black and white layers arranged alternately, creating a striated pattern. This formation located on the coast of the Sea of Japan is highly appreciated by geologists due to their scientific value.

Tatami Rock, commonly known as Susa Hornfels is located in Yamaguchi Prefecture of Japan and was formed about 15 million years ago. A mixture of sand and mud called turbidity currents, created by submarine landslides was deposited deep in the ocean. The large-grained sand sinked first, followed by the small-grained mud, resulting in a striped combination of white sand and black mud. Every time a turbidity current occured, this combination overlaped resulting in this type of geological formation. Although the site is known as Susa Hornfels, the name Tatami Rock came to be used because, unlike this rock, the Hornfels are formed by a thermal metamorphic process. You can admire Tatatmi Rock from a tour boat or go directly to the viewing point. This cliff is recognized as a Place of Scenic Beauty of Japan and a Natural Monument of Japan.

May happiness be with this place.
