✋Hello! Today we will visit a Fisherman's bastion located in the Castle District of Budapest, which is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city. Despite its name suggesting a defensive structure, it actually serves as a viewpoint from which you can admire the panorama of the city.

Fisherman's Bastion was built between 1895 and 1902 as one of the investments undertaken to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the founding of the Hungarian state. Its design is inspired by the neo-Romanesque architectural style, present during the reign of the first king of Hungary. The main façade extends approximately 140 meters and features seven stone towers, each representing the seven chieftains who founded Hungary in the 9th century. The bastion was built on the site of the fromer defensive walls of the royal castle. Its location was probably selected for its breathtaking views and proximity to the magnificent Matthias Church, which required restoration. There are several theories explaining the origin of the name. It is said that the fishermen's guild did not only care about selling fish, but in times of war its members defended the city walls, so the name commemorates their support. Other theories suggest that the name may derive from a nearby former fish market or from the fishermen who once resided in the "Watertown" along the Danube.
