Finding good punkwood is usually straightforward: look for pieces that are lightweight, spongy, and highly decayed. But there's one more key characteristic that identifies the premium punkwood for fire making.
Tear a piece across the grain and examine the end grain. If you find hundreds of holes per square inch, you've struck gold! These holes are from tubes that run throughout the length of the wood, feeding oxygen to embers and providing chambers for the ember to expand and grow rapidly.
