Reducing the speed of my top boarding, for some reason, causes the boards to grip the fire roll much better which causes the fire roll to become much tighter which makes it able to withstand twice the amount of downward pressure. Also, this technique keeps these greater pressures applied for a much longer period of time thereby creating much easier ignitions.
Using this method, I achieved 7 fire roll ignitions out of 8 tries with filler materials such as dried grass, dried burnweed, and punkwood. This video shows 3 successful Punkwood in Cotton fire roll ignitions out of 4 tries.
