OPALTON! The name is program! This is fossickers heaven. Well one of quite a few in Queensland. But if you - like us - love it absolutely remote and quiet, Opalton is the right place to get a taste of the Outback life. There is nothing else left from a once thriving Opal mining town. Yet there is still a great bush camp, where you can make yourself comfortable, to then spend hours, days, weeks or even months fossicking and noodling for Opals.
Be prepared though. While the bush camp has basic amenities, you won't be able to fill up your water tanks in your caravan or go shopping for groceries. You must be fully self-sufficient and your fridge should be well stocked.
For more information check out the visitor centres in Winton and Longreach. Grab one of the brochures about the Matilda Way, in which Opalton is featured, and you will get all the information you'll need to prepare for a great experience.
