The Rock of Cashel is famous for being the site where the King of Munster was converted by St. Patrick in the 5th century. The Rock of Cashel was also the traditional seat of the kings of Munster for several hundred years before the invasion of the Normans.

Situated on a prominent green hill, banded with limestone outcrops and filled with ancient fortifications, The Rock of Cashel is one of Ireland’s most spectacular archaeological sites. It’s only a five minute walk from the town centre up to the Rock and once you reach the top you have a fantastic vista of Tipperary countryside.

Among the monuments to be found at The Rock of Cashel is a Roman Chapel, a high cross, a round tower, a Gothic cathedral, an abbey, the Hall of the Vicars Choral and a fifteenth-century Tower House.

According to local legend St. Patrick came to this, the seat of the kings of Munster, to convert King Aenghus to Christianity. In 978 Brian Boru was crowned High King at Cashel in and made it the capital of his kingdom.

In 1101 the site was granted to the church and after this Cashel swiftly became a significant centre of ecclesiastical power in the country.
