The Rock of Cashel, also known as Cashel of the Kings and St. Patrick's Rock, is a historical site located at Cashel, County Tipperary, Ireland

The Rock of Cashel in Tipperary Ireland, does not constitute an actual castle but a formidable stronghold that served as the traditional seat of the Kings of Munster before the Norman invasion in the early 12th century. More than nine centuries ago, in 1101, the King of Muster donated it to the church.

In 1101 the rock was granted to the church by King Murtagh O'Brien. Cormac's Chapel was built between 1127 and 1134, and the cathedral was founded in 1169 and then replaced by the present building in the 13th century. Cashel also has a Georgian cathedral (1784), the seat of the Protestant bishop. Pop.

Initially, the Rock of Cashel was the main royal site for the kings of Munster. During its' time as a royal site (compare Rathcroghan), most likely, there would have been a stone fort on top of the hill as the name 'cashel' means stone fort. Most likely, the site had ritual and ceremonial significance.

Patrick's Rock, is a historic site in Ireland's province of Munster, located at Cashel, County Tipperary. The Rock of Cashel served as the traditional seat of the Kings of Munster for several hundred years prior to the Norman invasion, though few remnants if any of the early structures survive.

According to legend, the Rock of Cashel was created when Satan took a bite from Devil's Bit Mountain, north of Cashel, and spit it out here. In 1749, the Archbishop of Cashel, Arthur Price, made the controversial decision to remove the cathedral's roof.

Dominic’s Abbey lies to the southeast of the Rock of Cashel and was founded in 1243 by Archbishop David Mc Kelly and was dedicated to St. Dominic. David Mc Kelly is first mentioned as Dean of Cashel and then as a Dominican Friar. He became Bishop of Cloyne and in 1238 he was appointed Archbishop of Cashel. He died on 2nd March 1253 and was buried in the Chapel of the Apostles on The Rock.

It has been suggested that the carving of the bishop which is now on Miler Mc Graths tomb was originally on the tomb of Archbishop Mc Kelly. Dominics Abbey was supplied with monks from the Friary in Cork and in 1289 and 1307 General Chapters of the Order were held in Cashel. The abbey is cruciform in plan with a high tower over the crossing.

Hore Abbey, Ireland’s last medieval Cistercian monastery, was founded in 1272 in County Tipperary, just west of Cashel. It was colonised by monks from Mellifont Abbey and comprised a cruciform church, tower, square cloister, and living quarters.
Hore Abbey, found just outside of Cashel in County Tipperary, was originally a Benedictine monastery. In 1272, the archbishop of Cashel expelled the monks and Cistercians arrived from Mellifont Abbey.
