Whether you're a new boater, new to running your own boat, or navigating a different waterway than you're used to, knowing what the buoys and channel markers you'll encounter (in the United States and other countries that use the Class B navigation system) mean is not only useful but will help improve your safety on the water.

Join BoatUS Magazine's Lenny Rudow to learn navigation basics -- what the various, common aids to navigation (nav aids, or ATONs) such as buoys and channel markers mean. Some buoys and channel markers may be larger or smaller than what you see in this video depending on where you boat, but the meaning of the colors and shapes remains the same.

Keep in mind that the markers discussed here may be different from those used on inland waterways, and you should familiarize yourself with any local markers where you boat.
