Former Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond has died at 69.

A key figure in the Scottish independence movement, Salmond led Scotland from 2007 until 2014, stepping down after the independence referendum failed.

He collapsed after a speech in North Macedonia. Salmond also led the SNP to a major win in 2011, laying the groundwork for the independence vote.

He later resigned from the SNP in 2018 following sexual harassment allegations but was cleared in 2020.
