Talking about the protagonist of this fictional biography, one had best use the gender neutral personal pronoun ‚they‘, for Orlando starts out as a he and later becomes a she and has other remarkable qualities as well, viz. they live for more than three hundred years. ORLANDO is a declaration of love to England, to literature and, above all, to Vita Sackville-West, Virginia Woolf’s lover, who inspired the main character.
