It is stunning, how little the world has changed in the last hundred years if you look at the metaphysical struggle that dominates THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN, Thomas Mann’s famous novel: Young Hans Castorp enters the sanatorium Berghof in Davos in 1907 and spends seven years in this surreal biosphere in which rich people are dying together with sanity and liberalism. The representatives of humanism, first and forward Castorp’s mentor Settembrini, loose touch with reality and have to make way for the extremists of the world, personified by the Jesuit Naphta, whose suicide in the end is like the first shot of World War One - the apocalypse of European culture.
