1. The Origin and Painful History of Jindo Dogs

Jindo dogs are representative dogs of Korea,
native to Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do.

Before the Japanese colonial era, there were various native dogs in Korea,
including Jindo dogs, Sapsal dogs, Pungsan dogs,
Donggyeong dogs, and other unidentified small dogs.

Unfortunately, most indigenous dogs in Korea are almost extinct
because they were used as cold-resistant leather
in the Japanese colonial era.

However, Jindo dogs were able to escape the danger of extinction
since they were designated as a natural monument
by the Governor-General of Joseon in 1938.

Still to this day, Jindo dogs are designated as a natural monument
and are protected by the Korean Jindo Dog Protection Support Act*.

2. Jindo Dog? Jindo Dog? What’s the Difference?

Jindo dogs are sometimes spelled and called Jindo dogs*,
(*spelled differently in Korean)
but there is a big difference between the two names.

Among the many Jindo dogs, only those who meet the standards of the breed
and pass the examination by the Jindo district
can be called Jindo dogs and receive protection.


3. The Standards of Jindo Dogs

According to the Jindo Dog standard body type published by the Korea Jindo Dog Association,
Jindo dogs are a medium-sized dog breed
and are characterized by strong muscles and bones.

Also, Jindo dogs have six different fur colors,
which determine their names
such as white, fawn, black, and black-and-tan, etc.

Among them, the only fur colors that meet the standard of the Jindo dog
are fawn and white fur.


4. Nice to Their Family

Most Jindo dogs have a calm personality,
so they are friendly and gentle to their families;
However, they tend to be wary,
so they can show strong hostility to strangers.

Also, Jindo dogs are very bold and brave,
so they often don't get scared when they encounter
dogs or predators that are bigger than themselves.

In addition, they can be great guard dogs or hunting dogs
because they have excellent hunting instinct and ability
even without training.
