The main character this time is KOUKEN MURATA, a Japanese lacquer artist. Entered an art course at a high school in Kyoto, majoring in Japanese lacquer. At the tender age of 20, he was selected for the Nitten Exhibition for the first time, and after that he received prestigious awards such as the Kyoto City Art Newcomer Award and the Prime Minister's Award. He is one of the leading artists of modern Japanese lacquer art.
The consistent theme of Murata's work is "light and water." The eternal history of life that was born in water and evolved toward light is expressed through two-dimensional and three-dimensional modeling. Using various materials, such as torn Japanese paper and hardening it with Japanese lacquer, and using Antarctic sand, he creates innovative works.
Half a century of working with Japanese lacquer. We approach MURATA's work and thoughts.
