Air is not a completely transparent medium!
Let alone the fog :)
As the distance from the observation point increases, the contours become more blurred, the graphite in the case of pencil drawings less and less clear.
This phenomenon was well studied by Leonardo Da Vinci: THE aerial perspective!
Leonardo in his painting makes objects with increasingly blurred colors according to their distance, making those in the foreground clearer.

If we #draw according to this study we will obtain three-dimensional #drawings.

Everything is accentuated with the fog and we can experiment with the various levels of tone with the pencils.

The smudge will be very useful for the blur effect.

In this video tutorial I will use a #2H pencil for backgrounds in the distance up to a #12B pencil for the elements closest to the viewer.

In this landscape with bare #trees you will see how to obtain a three-dimensional setting with only 3 pencils
