On 6 August 2024, exactly fifty years to the day since the Joint Sitting of 1974, the Whitlam Institute hosted a Symposium titled “Historic, Unprecedented, Sobering”: The Double Dissolution and Joint Sitting of 1974.

In Session 2, we launch the Whitlam legacy paper ‘That Historic Occasion’: The Joint Sitting of 6-7 August 1974. In this paper, Distinguished Whitlam Fellow Professor Frank Bongiorno AM and Dr Joshua Black revisit and examine the legacy of the ‘historic’ Joint Sitting of 6-7 August 1974.
