מאז ה - 7 באוקטובר 2023 - שמחת תורה תשפ״ד - שבו פלשו בהפתעה אלפי פלסטינים לדרום של ישראל - טבחו באכזריות מטורפת, שרפו, ניתצו, אנסו, בזזו, גנבו, השמידו אותנו - אנחנו בעיצומה של מלחמה על הבית שלנו, הבית הלאומי, הבית הקיומי, הבית הפיזי שלנו. ״מלחמה שאף פעם לא די לה״ - כמו ששרה חוה אלברשטיין בשיר אחר.

בדיוק 50 שנים לפני ה - 7 באוקטובר 2023 - פלשו בהפתעה מצרים וסוריה לישראל. וגם אז היינו במלחמה על הקיום שלנו. וגם אז האובדן היה עצום. אבל ושכול בכל פינה.

את השיר ״לו יהי״ כתבה נעמי שמר לחוה אלברשטיין ממש ערב מלחמת יום כיפור, והוא הפך לשיר של המלחמה ומאז ליווה אותנו כל השנים, ואיפשר לנו להימלט אל תוך התקוה שאנחנו כל כך נשענים עליה - התקוה שיהיה ליהודים טוב. שיהיה לכולם טוב אפילו.

חמישים שנים אחרי זה - במלחמת ״חרבות ברזל״ - גם נכתבו, נכתבים ויכתבו שירים חדשים שמתארים את המצב שלנו עכשיו - אבל - השיר ״לו יהי״ - עדיין מהדהד סביבנו ובתוכנו - וגם הוא עכשיו סמל למלחמה הנוכחית שלנו.

חוה אלברשטיין מבצעת אותו כאן בביצוע חד פעמי ומרגש, על הבמה בתל אביב, יחד עם הבן של נעמי שמר, המוסיקאי אריאל הורוביץ - וכל הקהל שר ובוכה יחד איתה. לו יהי.

Since October 7, 2023—Simchat Torah 5784—when thousands of Palestinians unexpectedly invaded southern Israel, they brutally slaughtered, burned, destroyed, raped, looted, stole, and annihilated us. We are in the midst of a war for our home—our national home, our existential home, our physical home. “A war that never ends,” as Chava Alberstein sings in another song.

Exactly 50 years before October 7, 2023, Egypt and Syria launched a surprise invasion of Israel. Even then, we were in a war for our survival. Even then, the loss was enormous. Grief and mourning in every corner.

The song “Lu Yehi” was written by Naomi Shemer for Chava Alberstein on the eve of the Yom Kippur War, and it became the song of that war, accompanying us throughout the years. It allowed us to escape into the hope we so deeply cling to—the hope that things will be good for the Jews. That things will be good for everyone, even.

Fifty years later, in the “Iron Swords” war, new songs have been and will continue to be written, describing our current reality. Yet, the song “Lu Yehi” still echoes around us and within us, becoming a symbol of our current war as well.

Chava Alberstein performs it here in a unique and moving rendition, on stage in Tel Aviv, together with Naomi Shemer’s son, musician Ariel Horovitz, as the audience sings and cries along with her. Lu Yehi.
