This was the very first time Ducky was actually hitched to the cart. Prior to this she was harnessed up and allowed to drag the traces around the yard behind her with lots of praise and treat rewards. When she didn't seem too bothered by that, we hooked the traces to a gallon milk jug that was partially filled with water. The cart was pulled behind and beside her and she also tagged along when her sidekick, Gabe, was pulling the cart. We discovered after this hitch that her shafts had too much play in them so zip ties were attached to hold the side clips tighter to her chest strap. A couple of velcro straps were attached to the harness between her front legs to prevent the chest strap from slipping backwards and she suddenly caught on to the proper technique for turning her cart! Just 15 days after this first hitch, Ducky was entered in a Draft Test sponsored by the Bernese Mtn Dog Club and passed with flying colors adding the "NDD" (aka Novice Draft Dog) to her name!
