It's 11:33pm and I made the mistake of checking email before I went to bed. I just got a note that all of the “big box” retailers are going to “pass” on my new book The High 5 Habit because I am not a “known” author.

What.The. F$&@

My initial reaction is to want to act as though I am some kind of rebel with skin as thick as Valerian steel but the fact is I am human and rejection stings.

It triggers an old story that I have, that I’m always on the outside looking in, I am never invited to the party - I have to sneak in the back and once I’m there I feel like I don’t belong…can you relate?

Everyday life can knock you down a little, the secret is catching yourself before you get too low and learning how to lift yourself up.

I call this a high five attitude. It’s learning how to anchor down in optimism, hope, faith and meaning. And as I caught myself going down tonight, I decided to give myself and you a pep talk in real time and pick myself back up.

The truth is there will always be gatekeepers in life and people who say no. But the only gatekeeper that matters is the one in your mind. It’s your job to keep your mind open. When someone or something says no, your job is to say yes to yourself and keep going.

The High 5 Habit is the first print book I’ve written in almost five years. The tools, stories and research I share have helped me take control of my life, gather my strength, brush off rejection, raise my hand in defiance, in celebration, in belief and smile and keep on going.
