Muharram is a solemn occasion which marks the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain. It is observed on the tenth day of the month of Muharram, which is the first month in the Muslim calendar. His martyrdom is observed by long processions, especially amongst the Shia Muslims of India. Taziyas and green alams are ritually carried in the procession, accompanied by men who beat their breasts, recite mourning verses and sometimes hurt themselves to express their sorrow
