This clip gives an excellent explanation of how drugs block off the lower emotions of the ego and what is then experienced is the higher, which is why some people become addicted. It is not the drugs or alcohol itself, which only calibrate at about 75, but, the fact that they temporarily block what's painful and the person feels good for a short time.
