There are some ‘shers’ of Ghalib which have become iconic and have been often quoted. However , in Diwan- E- Ghalib one comes across several such shers that need to be talked about. The narrator says, I came across one such a sher that took possession of my mind. The sher is;

Like many other shers of Ghalib, some words from Pharasi and Urdu language need to be known in order to unlock the meaning of that sher. In this sher a word like ‘Jist’ is not commonly known unless you know Urdu language. Jist means life. Love makes our life.Not only that, the narrator says; at the crucial moment of our life what one requires is the ‘love’. Here, Ghalib does not mean to say love means, love between lover and beloved. But if one’s life is gladdened with the love life, that of lover and beloved, nothing good like that.The narrator gives examples of some popular Bollywood songs. In the very first line of this sher Ghalib says, you have filled my life with love. My life fragrance is nobody else but you. In the second line, Ghalib strengthens this bond of love. However, as ‘Andaz- E- bayan –Kuch- Aur’ have it, Ghalib gives a twist to established thought like that of Chekhov or Guy De Maupassant. This ‘twist in the tail’ like a situation in which a person is caught in the pool of mud on the bank of river. More he tries to get out of it, more he gets into it. Person becomes mad in live. And that madness itself becomes his life spirit. Love life is a one way traffic. There is a way in inside and way out is unknown. Ghalib celebrates the pangs of love in this ‘sher’.
