Park in the ghoul parking lot then cross the road. Take the hiking trail taking the trail on the right. You will go up towards Le Puy, passing through the vegetation. You will descend to the other side of Le Puy once you reach the top.
Duration: 2h30

▶ Puy de Dôme:

https://www.clermontauvergnetourisme....

The puy de Dôme is the highest peak of the tectonic Mecca of Puys - Limagne fault, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2018. It offers a breathtaking 360 ° view of the 80 volcanoes of various shapes aligned over 45 km long and 5 km wide ...
The very first thing to do is check the weather forecast, just to be sure the view will be clear.

How to get there?

Either with the train or in hikes.

Access by train:

At the foot of the Puy de Dôme, a large car park is set up near the Site House.
The electric cogwheel train takes you to the top of the Puy de Dôme in 15 minutes, with a frequency of 20 minutes in very high season, 40 minutes in high season and 1 hour the rest of the year.

In hikes:

The mule track
On the south side, the mule track climbs up to the top of the Puy de Dôme from the Col de Ceyssat for about 1.9 km of ascent, 350 meters of vertical drop, for 45 minutes to 1 hour walk. From the Site House, the circuit takes 6 km for a 1.5 to 2 hour walk.

The goat trail
Departing from the Site House, the north side circuit is 6 km long for a 1.5 to 2 hour walk.

Which one to choose ?
The most enjoyable thing is to go up the mule track, taking short breaks on the bends to admire the view that extends to Puy de Sancy on lucky days. On the way back, going down the goat trail is made easier by the staircase in a few sections. The first 500 meters of the path are on the road that runs along the railway line (the only section of road authorized for walkers). The view over the puy de Côme, the large and small Suchet and the Pariou is exceptional. The trail really leads to the heart of the Chaîne des Puys - Limagne fault, and it is a real treat.
