Microsoft was founded on April 4, 1975, by Paul Allen and Bill Gates. Their goal was to develop and sell BASIC interpreters for the Altair 8800 computer system. The company began to dominate the operating system market for personal computers with MS-DOS in the mid-1980s, and then continued its leadership with Microsoft Windows. It went public in 1986. As the stock value rapidly increased, it created three billionaires and 12,000 Microsoft employees became millionaires. Since the 1990s, the company has been expanding beyond the operating system market and making large-scale corporate acquisitions. Its biggest acquisitions include Activision, which it bought for $68.7 billion in January 2022, LinkedIn, which it acquired for $26.2 billion in December 2016, and Skype Technologies, which it acquired for $8.5 billion in May 2011.
