The Island Fox (Urocyon littoralis) from Santa Rosa Island (Urocyon littoralis santarosae) in the Channel Islands National Park was recently on the brink of extinction along with the foxes on Santa Cruz and San Miguel Islands. In August 2016 the Island Fox on the Northern Channel Islands was removed from the endangered species list. My wife Susie and I spent a week camping on SRI in September 2016 and feel blessed to have so many fox encounters.

The Island Fox is absolutely adorable, about the size of a housecat, and we instantly fell in love with them. These cute little guys don’t exist anywhere else on earth except here off our California coast. The fox on each island is a unique sub-species. The one on Santa Rosa has the longest ears! It’s also a descendant of the mainland Gray Fox. The story of the foxes brush with extinction and recovery is remarkable and inspiring. I provided some additional information at the end of the video.
