3 factors with which you can play better on the trumpet higher!

You probably know it: As soon as it gets a little higher, one or the other trumpeter tries to reach these tones with more air or more pressure. Unfortunately, with this technique we automatically lose sound, control, intonation and precession.

But what is important so that we can keep the points mentioned stable?

💡 First and foremost, we should be aware that a clear and controlled height is always an interplay of various points. Air pressure, air flow, tongue position, lip tension, breathing, and support.
Today we are dealing with three points:

1️⃣air flow
2️⃣Lip tension
3️⃣ tongue position

In order to be able to blow into a higher register, we need a faster air flow, thus a somewhat stronger lip tension and thus a somewhat higher lip position.
In order to find out how the individual points interact, that's exactly what we're training!

In the first exercise, we learn how a faster flow of air affects our pitch. For this we play a comfortable tone and give it a lot of air. You will feel and hear how your tone gets higher or blows into a higher register. Wonderful, that works. Unfortunately, the sound becomes very loud, uncontrolled and shrill. In order to be able to control this better, we use a slightly higher tongue position.

As a rule, we use a tongue position similar to the vowel a in the lower register, e in the middle register and i in the higher register. Play the exercise again and consciously think of the tongue position i on the higher note of the two, thus raising your tone. This gives you more control and allows you to place the sound precisely. Usually you can still hear a break between the two tones. You can get this wrapping controlled with the right lip tension. Train tied first, pushed later.
