In this episode, I start creating Hair Cards (Realtime hair for games) in Ornatrix 3ds Max, and also show how to get different layers of Branching and use a different texture of plates for each group, which in our case is necessary to achieve the desired result with the reference.

In the video I use a mannequin from Masha's course - https://www.artstation.com/a/29844491

The idea for this video came from a question on our Discord server -  / discord

TIMING:

0:00 - I continue to align the texture of the HairCards, since unfortunately in Fibershop there is no way to rotate all the plates at once. Be sure to do this in Edit Poly mode, or you can go to Fibershop and rotate all the plates one by one. You can also swap the colors. But personally, it's faster for me to do this in 3ds max.
3:32 - Next, we convert all HairCards to EditPoly again to delete all the creation history. Since we will not be editing them anymore.
4:14 - Let's start combing the HairCards. All manipulations with the guides should be done only in the Ox_Main layer.
4:51 - Ornatrix has a Rotate Strands tool, but it is inconvenient because you need to constantly rotate the HairCards during each combing, so I will create a modifier with the same name a little later to fix the position as much as possible.
8:08 - Adding Rotate Modifier. To keep the plates always facing at a fixed angle, enable the Orient Based on Strand Shape option and adjust the angle using the Angle option.
9:14 - The big advantage of Branching is that you can always turn off the display of the plates and work with the guides. When I work with them, I also turn off the Rotate Modifier, because otherwise I don't like the display of the "black" guides that intersect the green "main" ones.
10:01 - We continue to build the layers of the hairstyle. It is important to build them correctly, because if the wind blows and so on, you should always have something under the plates - like in real life. In other words, we form the plates in the same way as real hair. Yes, you can cheat a little bit, but don't get carried away. I always try to build all the layers so that the hairstyle is ready for any scenario.
12:28 - Another cool advantage of Branching is that you can hide unnecessary plates using the Ignore Hidden Strands function in MeshFromStrands and work with the ones you need.
12:55 - Here I already show the addition of a second group for the second Ox_Layer. Remember that we can assign any HairCard to any group at any time, which is very convenient.
13:05 - As I said, for everything to work correctly according to the Branching principle, you need to do all the manipulations in the Ox_Main layer and duplicate it in Reference mode - when creating new layers. Thus, everything you comb and change in this layer will affect all Reference layers.
13:15 - Here I choose a HairCard of a different color, as in the reference.
13:25 - Copy 2 modifiers from the first layer and paste them into the new one. But don't forget to change the group number and assign the material
14:17 - Next, we start editing the different parameters of this layer.
15:16 - Another nuance that I want to show. To make the plate fit snugly to the surface, in MeshFromStrands - you need to enable the option Conform To Surface = Surface Normal
15:45 - Also, if you want, you can edit the guide points.
16:28 - And remove the ribbing with the Detail modifier.
17:33 - Next, we continue to create guides for this layer.
20:57 - Here I added another layer and I will come back to it.
24:17 - Editing the second layer. Remember that these are still layers of the Base layer, just different HairCards. Then we will create other layers.
30:40 - To be continued...
