Scoliosis is an unnatural sideways curvature of the spine with rotation and a Cobb angle measurement of 10 degrees or greater. The Cobb angle is usually measured via scoliosis X-rays.

Scoliosis is divided by levels of severity which are based on their qualification for surgery, not the effects of scoliosis on the body.
Mild: Cobb angle measurement of 10-25 degrees
Moderate: Cobb angle measurement of 26-40 degrees
Severe: Cobb angle measurement of 40-80 degrees
Very severe: Cobb angle measurement 80 degrees or greater

Scoliosis is progressive in nature, so if left untreated, it will progress although at varying speeds. Mild Scoliosis should be treated as soon as possible because every severe case at some point was a mild case. Scoliosis is most progressive during adolescence, where it normally doesn’t cause pain. The main symptom is postural deviation. In the adult stage, it can progress very slowly, but over time, as it keeps growing, it can cause pain and discomfort.

To treat the scoliosis, you need to assess how flexible the scoliosis is and how much reduction you see is possible. While in traditional treatment, scoliosis treatment is defined as successful if it does not progress to requiring surgery, the recommendation is just to watch and wait. In conservative treatment, we slow the curve down and reduce it as a response to the treatment. We recommend treating a small curve where we can get a much better reduction than when it has worsened and become severe as the body starts to adapt around the scoliosis.

At the Scoliosis Reduction Center, we offer conservative treatment that is nonsurgical. The best thing to do with 20 degree scoliosis is to treat it proactively so that it doesn’t grow, and you don’t need to consider surgical options as a treatment option.
