Sony Classical continues its major Mozart opera project with conductor Teodor Currentzis and his orchestra & choir musicAeterna: A ‘no-compromise’ studio recording cycle of Mozart’s three Da Ponte operas. Living in a unique artistic community established on the edge of Siberia, the musicians worked and recorded under ideal conditions.

Teodor Currentzis says: ‘I think it is a tremendously powerful work because, if Figaro is an opera about revolution in society and art, Così is about revolution in the sphere of love, Currentzis states. In Così he used a grotesque libretto as his vehicle. But are we supposed to believe that Mozart, who understood life so deeply, somehow overlooked the outrageousness of the story? The awesome genius who singlehandedly re-invented opera, to make it capture all of life’s flawed, heartbreaking beauty with such power, such truth, such wisdom? I say Così is exactly how he wanted it. It’s all done on purpose, every single word of it.
Così is really Mozart’s best ensemble opera musically; in parts it’s much more serious than even the music of Don Giovanni. Mozart wanted the clownerie of this libretto – and then set to it his best music, the music of angels. It’s that contradiction which lifts you out of your morality, returns you to the instinctive feelings of your youthful naïveté, to those beautiful, playful feelings of your first love. You understand who you are again.’
