In this episode of "Dyslexia Discussions & More," Dr. Tim Conway, PhD Neuropsychologist, delves into Phonological Alexia, a reading disorder that is more severe than Dyslexia. While both Dyslexia and Phonological Alexia impairs the ability to decode or sound out words when reading, spelling phonetically and identify and correct phonological errors when reading, spelling or speaking too, Phonological Alexia may have additional motor, speech and cognitive deficits that make this acquired reading disorder far more complicated to empower/improve than Dyslexia.

Despite Phonological Alexia’s similarities with Dyslexia, in how it affects reading, spelling, speech and auditory memory, the key distinction lies in the origin or cause of Phonological Alexia’s deficits. In short, Dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental disorder with a genetic basis; there is a genetic predisposition or increased likelihood due to genetics and thus Dyslexia tends to run in families. In contrast, Phonological Alexia is an acquired condition resulting from brain injury, such as a stroke or traumatic brain injury (TBI).

As a deep dive into the complexities of reading, Dr. Conway will explain the neurological underpinnings of Phonological Alexia, its parallels with Dyslexia in terms of functional impairment, and the critical differences between their etiologies. Also, this episode will discuss evidence-based approaches to intervention (aka neurorehabilitation) that first aim to restore or rebuild speech processing and phonological awareness (ie for Phonological Alexia). This discussion also relates to remediation of Dyslexia, focusing on empowering weak phonological awareness into a strength (ie for Dyslexia), on par with the child, teen or adult’s IQ (true potential). Uniquely, Dr Conway is peer-review published in the effective empowerment of Dyslexia with remedial intervention and peer-review published in the empowerment of Phonological Alexia with neurorehabilitative treatment. Ultimately, the aim of remedial intervention and neurorehabilitative treatment is to fully empower each person’s phonological awareness, reading, spelling and speaking skills to the highest level we can help them achieve. Then they have even more opportunities and abilities to build even stronger out of the box thinking, reasoning, problem solving and many more strengths.

Whether you’re a parent, teacher, caregiver, healthcare professional, family member, friend or someone interested in understanding these different reading disorders, this episode offers scientifically grounded insights into Phonological Alexia and into parallels and differences with Dyslexia, as well as discusses effective methods to empower those individuals faced with these challenges.

Tune in to learn more about the evidence-based empowerment that can help individuals rebuild or empower their reading, spelling and speaking abilities after brain injury or following identification or a diagnosis of Dyslexia.
